St.Columba's college, Hazaribag is one of the oldest seats of learning in Eastern India. It was established by Dublin University Mission, Ireland in 1895 to promote higher education in the region. This was the first ever residential college in undivided Bihar, Bengal and Orissa. In addition to Dublin University, this college witnessed Universities such as Calcutta, Bihar, Patna, Ranchi and finally Vinoba Bhave, under whom it was/is affiliated.

The department of geology was established to impart geiology teaching in the college by Ranchi University in the year 1982 keeping in view the growing need of geologists in the country. Initially three teachers namely Dr. V.C.Barla, Dr.Bipin Kumar and Dr. Bijay Singh were appointed by Ranchi University Selection Committee, Dr. Barla being the head of the department. B.Sc (Hon) teaching was imparted initially. Later on, the department was entrusted to impart postgraduate teaching in geology from 1987. Dr. S.K.Sinha was relocated from P.G.Centre, Chaibasa in the year 1989. The department witnessed meteoric rise during a short span of time as a result of dedicated team work of its faculty members. A full-fledged P.G. department of geology was established in the year 1992 with the creation of Vinoba Bhave University. In the beginning it was hosted in St. Columba's college premises. Prof. (Dr.) Rajeshwar Singh from Ranchi University was transferred to P.G. dept. of geology as the founder head. Dr. S.K.Sinha was also transferred to P.G.department. A National Seminar on 'Geology and Environment' was organized by the department in 1997, which was a grand success. Dr. H.N.Sinha, a noted micropalaeontologist joined the dept. in 1996 as lecturer on the recommendation of BPSC. Dr. Deepak Kumar , a senior Reader from Giridih college was also transferred to St. Columba's college in 2004. He rendered his valuable services to the dept. for a comparatively shorter period. A great loss to geology fraternity was caused due to his sad demise in 2008.

the faculty members of this dept. have contributed significantly in the fields of teaching, research, project and in marking their presence in the seminars, symposia and workshop of National and International levels. The alumni of this dept. are doing well and serving different organisations such as GSI, Coal India Ltd., UCIL, NHPC, SNC-LAVALIN, IL & FS Energy Dev Corp. Ltd, RITES, RM Software, Suvira Group, Adhunik Group, Rough Guides, SEW Infrastructures, different Universities and colleges besides different non-geological services such as Indian Police Service(IPS), Indian Railway Service (IRTS), Banking, Insurance etc.

The whole geology family of the college and the University is committed to the cause of quality geology education in the country in general and Jharkhand in particular.
