St.Columba's college, Hazaribag is one of the oldest seats of learning in Eastern India. It was established by Dublin University Mission, Ireland in 1895 to promote higher education in the region. This was the first ever residential college in undivided Bihar, Bengal and Orissa. In addition to Dublin University, this college witnessed Universities such as Calcutta, Bihar, Patna, Ranchi and finally Vinoba Bhave, under whom it was/is affiliated.

The department of geology was established to impart geiology teaching in the college by Ranchi University in the year 1982 keeping in view the growing need of geologists in the country. Initially three teachers namely Dr. V.C.Barla, Dr.Bipin Kumar and Dr. Bijay Singh were appointed by Ranchi University Selection Committee, Dr. Barla being the head of the department. B.Sc (Hon) teaching was imparted initially. Later on, the department was entrusted to impart postgraduate teaching in geology from 1987. Dr. S.K.Sinha was relocated from P.G.Centre, Chaibasa in the year 1989. The department witnessed meteoric rise during a short span of time as a result of dedicated team work of its faculty members. A full-fledged P.G. department of geology was established in the year 1992 with the creation of Vinoba Bhave University. In the beginning it was hosted in St. Columba's college premises. Prof. (Dr.) Rajeshwar Singh from Ranchi University was transferred to P.G. dept. of geology as the founder head. Dr. S.K.Sinha was also transferred to P.G.department. A National Seminar on 'Geology and Environment' was organized by the department in 1997, which was a grand success. Dr. H.N.Sinha, a noted micropalaeontologist joined the dept. in 1996 as lecturer on the recommendation of BPSC. Dr. Deepak Kumar , a senior Reader from Giridih college was also transferred to St. Columba's college in 2004. He rendered his valuable services to the dept. for a comparatively shorter period. A great loss to geology fraternity was caused due to his sad demise in 2008.

the faculty members of this dept. have contributed significantly in the fields of teaching, research, project and in marking their presence in the seminars, symposia and workshop of National and International levels. The alumni of this dept. are doing well and serving different organisations such as GSI, Coal India Ltd., UCIL, NHPC, SNC-LAVALIN, IL & FS Energy Dev Corp. Ltd, RITES, RM Software, Suvira Group, Adhunik Group, Rough Guides, SEW Infrastructures, different Universities and colleges besides different non-geological services such as Indian Police Service(IPS), Indian Railway Service (IRTS), Banking, Insurance etc.

The whole geology family of the college and the University is committed to the cause of quality geology education in the country in general and Jharkhand in particular.

  1. Really great memory and knowledge assembled here. We recall all the memory of our period (1992-1999) in the department (St Columba's college and VBU department in college premises). You are right Sir, the national seminar 'Geology and Environment' was the bench mark recognition of our department.

We started our Geology Journey under Guidance of DR. V C Barla, Dr. S K Sinha and Dr. Vipin Kumar in 1992. The field knowledge of Hazaribag and around started with Barla Sir in two wheeler (almost 10-12).

The most amazing excursion cum field work we did in 1995, tour of Badrinath, Joshi Math, Haridwar & Rishikesh with Vipin Sir. We had group of 8 people in that great trip. The gang was......

Me, Prakash K Shrivastava, Pritesh Prakhar, Ritesh Rituraj, Alok Sinha, Anita Varughese, Amit Sahay, Ravi Udai Singh. Unfortunately some of our batch mate were not attended that trip. I recall Niva Shrivastava was missing lots after our frequent discussion of trip.

The major field work (Hazaribag Chibasa & Orissa Border) in 1998 were big addition to our knowledge. A big Thank to Dr. S K Sinha sir and Dr. Rajeshwar Singh Sir, who arranged that field work. I learn the basic Geology in that field work. Its dam true and fact no Geology is without field work.

Lots to say and share. We are wherever all becuase our base is attached from Geology Department, Hazaribag.

Last but not the least a big congratulation and thanks to Abhishek, who started the platform to share views and memory.

    Best

  3. I am really surprised to see this communication started by you people. Just now I got the link of this blog from rajesh.

I was there between 1992-95. During that period we had great time with our friends. All of us shared a great bond of friendship which we are continuing till today. At a very short notice (say 10-20 min) we plan for a tour even at that time when there were no mobile phones. We use to celebrate small functions like birthday party, picnic or even teacher's day. Ours most favourable place for such celebrations use to be at Lake or Kanhari Hill. I am sure that you people must have also enjoyed in a different way. I think we were the first batch in geology department who went on excursion cum field work in 1995, (Badrinath, Joshi Math, Dehradun, Mussorie, Haridwar & Rishikesh.

We share great relations with our teachers. We were very much comfortable with them. Lots of regards to our dear teachers.

    Wish you all the best.

  5. The blogs recalled the memories of our Geology Department at ST. Columbas College and Vinoba Bhave University in general and our B.Sc. & M. Sc Batch (92-99) in particular.

Thanks to those who organized the get together at Hazaribag. Unfortunately I could not attend because I had to move from Hazaribag to other place on the occasion of Chat puja, although I was there at Hazaribag between 22nd to 26thOct.

I really appreciate the efforts taken by few people to organize this get together and further advise them to give this get together a Name and Schedule (once in 3-4 years at VBU campus).

I do share the memories of our field trip to in and around Chaibasa area. On way to Chaibasa, our group stopped at Sanjay river section near Chakardharpur where Phyllite rocks are exposed. Our mentor Dr. S. K. Sinha guided us how to measure dip & strike. Boss this is true Phyllite me dip & strike lene ka maja hi kuch aur hai. We have also seen box fold first time in Sanjay river section. We have also collected few samples of cm scale folds, I hope those samples are preserved in our department library.

There are other memories of our Department. Hope our batch remember Teachers Day celebration with antakshiri and my song with our Alka Yagnik (Gubli)- “Tere bina zindagi se koi sikwa nahin….”.

Still there are many memories BUT first of all I thank to all our teachers of the department who guided us to reach this level.

Best of luck to all of you and good luck to the present batch of the department for their future endeavour.
